The Story of Duxford
The Imperial War Museum opened the Duxford site in 1976. A campaign to fund an American air museum on the site began in 1985, but went into abeyance with the recession. Fund seeking revived in the early 1990s and detailed design got under way in early 1995. The project received £6.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and $1 million from Saudi Arabia. Total building cost was £11 million, of which the construction cost was £8.5 million. The concrete tender was £4.5 million; the glass wall cost £1.1 million. The roof shape is in part a response to the massive B52 bomber with its 61m wing span and 16m high tail. Planes up to 10 tonne can be suspended from the roof. Heavier items stand on the floor. The concrete roof weighs 6000 tonne and covers 6500m2
